The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) together with the Communication and Journalism Department of De La Salle University – Dasmariñas, Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts of Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan, and CineKasimanwa with The Negros Museum will gather Philippine Cinema filmmakers, students, teachers and enthusiasts from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in a common celebration of one hundred (100) years of Filipino film artistry at the “SANDAAN: Philippine Cinema Centennial Conference – The Filipino Film Centenary Expedition (TFFCE)” to be held in the 3 main island groups of the Philippines from November 16, 2018 to December 8, 2018.
SANDAAN TFFCE brings 100 years of Philippine Cinema to Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao through a journey of explorations of the country’s film history as a foundation for the charting of the future of Philippine Cinema.
The SANDAAN TFFCE to the 3 main island groups of the Philippines will inspire local filmmakers, film students, film teachers, and film enthusiasts to reconnect to the foundation of Philippine Cinema and enable them to have a firm foundation as creators of local films as the journey of Philippine Cinema continues on to the next century.
Insights gained from the conference talks and film screenings can enable regional filmmakers, students, teachers and enthusiasts to organize local filmmaking communities that will advocate for the development and promotion of local cinema which benefits the Philippine Cinema landscape.
Filmmaking communities would then be equipped with knowledge and appreciation of Philippine Cinema as a foundation for future filmmaking workshops, trainings, and productions.
Given that cinema is a powerful tool in calling attention to societal concerns, serving as a document of the culture and heritage of a particular time, it is imperative that local filmmakers are equipped with the knowledge of the foundation of local filmmaking history and its lessons.
Metro Manila as the traditional center of filmmaking in the Philippines, has already witnessed the two celebrations of the centenary of Philippine Cinema through the Sandaan: Philippine Cinema Centennial Conferences, held at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, and the College of St. Benilde in Manila.
The organizers of SANDAAN TFFCE believe that bringing the Philippine Cinema Centennial celebrations beyond the nation’s capital to allow Filipino filmmaking to be celebrated in the 3 main islands of the Philippines will help spread awareness of this milestone.
The diversity of film outputs from locations outside Metro Manila, necessitate the inclusion of regional filmmakers in the mapping of the Future of Philippine Cinema.
