Pure Bayanihan, a US-based nonprofit organization, has launched a nationwide initiative to provide sustainable livelihood programs aimed at lifting Filipinos out of poverty. The organization’s goal is to create one million livelihoods, focusing on community-driven solutions to help alleviate poverty in the Philippines.
With 15.5% of Filipinos still living in poverty, despite progress from 18.1% in 2021, Pure Bayanihan is addressing systemic barriers that hinder economic stability, particularly in rural areas. The lack of access to quality education and stable employment continues to challenge many Filipinos.
Inspired by the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan, the nonprofit’s mission is to empower individuals through skills development, entrepreneurial opportunities, and increased access to essential support. “The fact is that some Filipinos are just one storm away from having nothing; they might also be one hand up away from getting out of nothing,” said Barry Harrigan, Chairman of Pure Bayanihan. “Filipinos, with a little help, could make a big recovery from hardships and lift themselves up.”
One of the organization’s successful programs empowers single mothers and widows. In Diffun, Quirino, a group of women underwent food processing skills training, equipping them with the tools to start businesses and achieve financial independence. Similarly, in Baseco, Manila, women like Rhenia are using seed capital to create income through plastic trading, breaking the cycle of poverty.
Pure Bayanihan is also addressing environmental and social issues. In Manila, it is turning waste into valuable products, and in Iloilo, it supports Kangkong farmers by providing them with motorized tricycles to boost their market access and income.
With these successful initiatives, Pure Bayanihan has positively impacted 50 communities, 1,898 families, and 9,490 individuals across the Philippines. The organization plans to expand further and is seeking partnerships with local governments, businesses, and international organizations to amplify its impact.
Upcoming projects include hilot healing skills training for Indigenous communities in Tanay, Rizal, sugarcane juicing equipment for farmers in Ilocos Sur, and a washing machine vending program for stay-at-home mothers in Navotas City.
