The need to attend on-site or on-campus classes while having childcare and household responsibilities is one of the reasons why it can be challenging to continue education after becoming a parent. But cheer up, moms and dads! The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Open University System (PUP OUS) recently announced that it now offers online courses for parents to study from home to achieve both their family duties and academic goals.
Other target beneficiaries of the program include individuals living in rural areas, as well as adult learners who want to continue their undergraduate studies.
Tuition fees are covered by the RA 10931 Law or the Universal Access to Tertiary Education Act, which makes tuition and other fees free for students who meet the admission standards of the university.
Meanwhile, the students’ mode of learning under the program will be synchronous, with virtual lectures, and asynchronous, with instructional materials or modules.
Success Story of an Online Student
The programs offered by PUP-OUS have helped many people in the past, like Rochelle Ariola, a mother, and a graduate of PUP-OUS with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration.
“The program helped me pursue my dream of attending college for free and without having to sacrifice my work. With the course I took, I had the opportunity to gain knowledge on how the government manages our country. It’s beneficial to me because I aspire to work in the government and serve the people,” Ariola told GoodNewsPilipinas.
The Open University schedule allowed Rochelle to study on weekends while managing her full-time work and childcare duties during the weekdays.
Her son is also the main reason why she persevered. “I also want to be a good example to my son, I want him to see that age and status in life is not an obstacle to achieving our dreams,” Rochelle said.
Rochelle encourages others like her who are planning to continue their interrupted studies and want to achieve their dreams: “It might be hard to balance work, taking care of a child, housework, and being a student, but if you know why you’re doing it, there’s no reason to give up.”
