France the 2018 FIFA World Cup champions has a goalkeeper of Filipino descent.

Alphonse Areola, the third keeper of French club champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has been with the senior national team of France since 2015.

The Fil-French now holds the distinction of being the first footballer of Filipino and Asian descent to be part of a World Cup champion team.

Areola, born in Paris to migrant Filipino parents, has played for every level of French youth teams before his promotion to the senior squad.

The 25-year old signed up to be pro at the age of 16, the youngest in France’s league history and is described by FIFA at one of the finest keepers of his generation.

Areola is acknowledged as the hero of the French national team which he led to its first ever title in the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2013 when he saved 2 penalty kicks from Uruguay in the final game.
