Pinoy barista Timothy John Sahagun Sabandal has won the Asia Pacific championship title at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s (CBTL) 13th International Barista Competition.
TJ Sabandal competed among fifteen contestants from around the world who came to the Philippines for the July 12 barista contest held at Seda BGC Hotel.
The contestants competed in their respective categories which include 2019 Asia Pacific (APAC), 2019 Middle East (ME), and 2018 World. Each contestant needed to make espresso shots, cappuccinos, and their original signature drinks within a limited time. They were judged according to technical and presentation skills.
Sabandal bested 8 contestants from the Asia Pacific which include: Bangladesh, Brunei, India, East Malaysia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and South Korea.
Aside from bagging the 1st place in the APAC category, the Philippine bet also won the Best Signature Drink for his Jasmine tea in a tie with South Korea’s Changhee Choi.
Qatar and Singapore placed 1st in the ME and World categories, respectively,
Sabandal, as the APAC Champion, will compete against the ME and American Champions for the World Title of the International Barista Competition happening next year.
