The Philippines took home five recognitions from the 27th World Travel Awards (WTA) including the prestigious title of World’s Leading Dive Destination, World’s Leading Tourist Attraction, and 3 citations for its resorts.
After winning the WTA regional rounds as Asia’s Leading Dive Destination and Leading Beach Destination on November 3, 2020, the country conquered the World Awards announced in the virtual Grand Finals ceremony on November 27, 2020.
The Philippines, after scoring 4 world nominations at the 2020 WTA, has now claimed the Leading Dive Destination for two consecutive years, besting 8 other beautiful locations from around the globe including the Maldives, Bora Bora in French Polynesia, Fiji, and Great Barrier Reef, Australia among others.
The historic ‘Walled City’ of Intramuros in Manila won its first World Travel Award for Leading Tourist Attraction, defeating 15 iconic tourist attractions in the world including Burj Khalifa of Dubai, Grand Canyon National Park, USA, Great Wall of China, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, among others.
Intramuros was also named as 2020 Asia’s leading tourist attraction, a feat the historic city first achieved in 2016.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) went on Facebook to announce the recent victory of the Philippines, saying:
“Congratulations to the Philippines for winning two prestigious world titles in the 27th World Travel Awards! The Philippines is now recognized as the World’s Leading Dive Destination and Intramuros (Intramuros Administration) now holds the title of the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction. Show the world #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines by celebrating and sharing these big wins for the country!”
The WTA also awarded 3 Philippine resorts:
- World’s Leading Casino Resort 2020 (City of Dreams Manila, Philippines)
- World’s Leading Dive Resort 2020 (Amanpulo, Philippines)
- World’s Leading Luxury Themed Resort 2020 (El Nido, Pangulasian Island, Philippines)
The Philippines has gained multiple recognitions from various world-class travel magazines such as the Tripadvisor 2020 Traveller’s Choice Awards that named Luzon as World’s Top 2 Trending Destination and has dominated Asia’s Top Islands in Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.
