Filipino-American teen speed skater Peter Groseclose will be representing the Philippines at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games to be held in Gangwon, South Korea.
The Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) announced that Groseclose made the cut for the prestigious quadrennial meet scheduled for next year.
Prior to the announcement, Groseclose competed at the Junior World Short Track Speed Skating in Dresden, Germany, a qualifying event for the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
The 15-year-old short-track speed skater had a strong showing in the men’s 500m, 1000m, and 1500m events of the world championships in January.
Groseclose’s upcoming participation in the youth Olympics is the third time a Filipino athlete has qualified for the event following Julian Macaraeg’s appearance in 2020 in Singapore and Michael Martinez’s appearance in the 2012 edition in Innsbruck, Austria.
“This will be a momentous event for the Philippines as it will be the third appearance of Filipino ice skaters in the prestigious quadrennial meet, and the first back-to-back representation for 2020 and 2024 games,” the Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) wrote in a Facebook post on February 9, 2023.
Born in Tarzana, Los Angeles in the United States, Groseclose took up skating at the age of seven. Groseclose is a new addition to the Philippine national team and only took on his first International Skating Union (ISU) event in Montreal, Canada last year.
Groseclose is set to compete in the Winter Youth Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Korea from January 20 to February 2, 2024.
Ana Noelle Reynado Wahleithner is the first Filipina to qualify to compete at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
Filipino American skier Asa Miller represented the Philippines at the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
