UPDATED 10 June 2021 – The Philippines’ champion skater, Margielyn Didal, has officially earned the 10th spot in the nation’s official delegation to the Tokyo Olympics.
World Skate Skateboarding issued on June 10 the official announcement of the Top 20 Women Street Skateboarding athletes qualified for the inaugural event at the Tokyo Olympics.
“It’s official! Here’s the top 20 for Women’s Street Skateboarding that’s going to the Olympics in Tokyo! Congratulations to every skateboarder that poured their everything into this!”
The Skateboarding Association of the Philippines earlier shared on social media that the Didal has earned a slot in the quadrennial games ahead of the official announcement at the close of the last Olympics Qualifiers at the World Championships Finals in Rome.
Asia’s Skater of the Year awardee from Cebu reached the semifinals of the competition, landing at the 17th position but bowed out of the World Skate finals over the weekend.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old athlete’s current placement at World No. 13 secures her spot in the inaugural skate event at the Olympics where the top 16 are given berths.
“The official announcement of qualified skaters will only be released after the World Championships Finals in Rome, but Skate Pilipinas would like to be the first to announce that our very own Margielyn Didal has earned a slot for the Tokyo Olympics. Congratulations Margie! Mabuhay ka Margie!” posted Skate Pilipinas on June 5, 2021.
Margielyn Didal is expected to join Filipino athletes who earlier qualified for the Olympics, namely, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Caloy Yulo, boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, taekwondo Jin Kurt Barbosa, and rower Cris Nievarez.
