The Philippine women’s softball team, also known as the RP Blu Girls, has climbed four notches to World No. 26 after its Top 4 performance at the Women’s Softball Asia Cup and receiving a wild card spot in the upcoming World Cup.
The Philippines was named top climber scoring 446 points on the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) latest rankings released April 12, 2023, days after the Filipinas secured its spot in the World Cup with a 4th place finish in the Asia Cup held in Incheon, South Korea from April 2-8.
The wild card entry marks the Filipina team’s third consecutive World Cup following appearances in the 2016 and 2018 editions, which also represents their longest streak in the history of the competition – setting a new record for the country. The Philippines will be aiming for their second medal in the Women’s Softball World Cup, following their bronze win in Osaka, Japan, in 1970.
The Philippines finished the preliminary round of the Asia Cup with a 5-3 win-loss record, securing a bronze medal match against Chinese Taipei on April 8, 2023. The Blu Girls triumphed over Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and India, while suffering defeats against Japan, China, and Chinese Taipei.
