The Philippines has been named the next big thing in travel by The Times UK, Britain’s oldest national daily newspaper.
The nation of 7,641 islands is presented as “The underrated country set to become Southeast Asia’s next big thing” in the digital edition of The Times published in January 2023.
The Times writer Sarah Gillespie highlighted the Philippines for its people, colorful past, and natural beauty. “A warm welcome, unique history and gorgeous scenery means more visitors than ever are landing in the Philippines,” reads the introduction to the feature article.
Gillespie went on to spot the differences between the Philippines and more popular travel destinations featuring elephants and temples in neighboring Thailand and Cambodia:
- Unique history as Spain’s only significant Asian colony, leaving traces such as the Walled City of Intramuros and Fort Santiago which houses a shrine to national hero Jose Rizal
- Long Christmas season which stretches from September to January
- Bicol’s offerings of Mayon Volcano majestic scenery and water sports
- Vast culinary variety among regions
