The Philippines’ Elijah Canlas has won the award for Best Actor at the 16th Annual Harlem International Film Festival in New York, U.S.A.
The IdeaFirst Company shared news of Canlas’ latest achievement via Twitter on May 15, 2021.
The Filipino actor was recognized for his lead and title role in the multi-awarded independent film, “Kalel, 15” written and directed by Jun Lana.
“CONGRATULATIONS @elijahcanlas_ for winning Best Actor in the 2021 Harlem International Film Festival in New York, USA! You make your IdeaFirst family very proud!” The IdeaFirst Company announced.
Produced by the IdeaFirst Company, the 2019 film follows a fifteen-year-old boy (Canlas) as he grows up in a dysfunctional family and deals with an HIV diagnosis.
The award-winning “Gameboys” actor also shared the announcement and gave a shout-out to the team behind the critically acclaimed Filipino movie on Twitter.
“Crazy. Thanks to the Harlem International Film Festival for this honor. This goes to the entire Kalel, 15 team. I’m grateful,” Elijah Canlas said.
Filipino television, film, and theater actor Elijah Canlas earlier won Best Actor for the same role in the 17th Asian Film Festival held in Rome, Italy last year.
The Harlem International Film Festival (Hi) inspires and entertains by honoring dynamic films by anyone about anything under the sun.
Among the past winners of the Harlem International Film Festival is Filipina actress Ruby Ruiz who won the Best Actress award in 2020 for her portrayal of the lead character in the indie film, “Iska”.
