The Philippines’ Darius Venerable bagged the gold medal in the recently held 2020 Online World Taekwondo-Asia Championships Poomsae Open.
The Philippine National Team member from the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) registered 7.02 points outranking six other taekwondo players in the Men’s Poomsae Freestyle category held in a live-streamed event on December 4, 2020.
Venerable, who won a gold medal at the Asian Taekwondo Championships in Vietnam in 2019, beat players from South Korea, Indonesia, and Thailand.
The gold medalist, who hails from Candelaria, Quezon, overtook silver medalist Kim Ji Won of South Korea with a 0.22 point lead.
The Filipino taekwondo player constantly elicited wows from the tournament announcers with his graceful performance and precise routine.
Venerable is known to be a rising star for the UST’s Poomsae team and snagged a silver medal in the men’s team category in the UAAP Season 82.
The country’s national player is also a silver medalist in the 30th Southeast Asian Games last year.
Filipino taekwondo players who have been dominating various international martial arts competitions include karateka James De Los Santos who is now the World No. 1 eKata player, Rodolfo Reyes, Jr. who snagged gold at the Lents Taekwondo World Online Poomsae in September 2020, the Philippine jins who conquered South Korea’s Shinhan Taekwondo Festival and bagged 56 golds, and Filipino kids who won 7 golds in Taekwondo Championship tourney in Hong Kong, both in 2019.
