Students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System have won two awards in the 52nd International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) organized online in Switzerland.
Franco Mari Cabral of the PSHS-Main Campus bagged a bronze medal, while Harold Scott Chua, also from the PSHS-Main Campus, received an honorable mention in this year’s competition.
This was the first time that the Philippines has sent a delegation to the annual physics competition for high school students since 2019, according to Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas (SPP).
The Philippine national team, composed of three students from the PSHS-Main Campus and PSHS-Calabarzon Regional Campus, participated in the IPhO which was held virtually from July 10 to 17, 2022.
The Philippine representatives competed amongst 400 participants from 75 countries and territories in the competition, which was initially scheduled to be located in Belarus but was instead held as an online competition organized by Switzerland due to various difficulties faced by Belarus as host of the annual contest.
This year’s Philippine national delegation to the IPhO is composed of the following students: Franco Mari Cabral (PSHS-Main Campus), Harold Scott Chua (PSHS-Main Campus), and Gabriel Angelo Vila (PSHS-Calabarzon Regional Campus). They were joined by team leaders Dr. Jose Perico Esguerra and Dr. Alexander De Los Reyes, and invigilators Dr. Rhenish Simon and Niña Angelica Zambale.
The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is the World Championship Physics Competition for high school students and is held annually in a different country. The first IPhO was held in 1967 in Poland.
Students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Ilocos Region Campus led four schools’ seven awards haul including one gold in the 2022 Newtonian International Physics Olympiad Challenge (NIPOC).
Philippine high schools recently won two medals and four awards at the 63rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Oslo, Norway, considered the world championship of high school mathematics competitions.
