The Philippine Male Singers, a choir composed of former San Beda College Chorale members, achieved international acclaim by securing two top prizes at the prestigious 2023 Hainan Prize Choir Competition. The event was a highlight of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Choir Festival held in Haikou, China.
Under the expert leadership of Music Director and Conductor Robert Delgado, the Filipino group emerged victorious as the winner of the Choirs of Equal Voices category and also earned the Gold Diploma Level V. Their performances at the Hainan University Concert Hall from November 17 to 21 captivated the audience and judges alike.
Their participation marked the Philippines’ significant presence among eight international choirs at this globally recognized competition, known for its rigorous standards akin to the World Choir Games.
The group’s winning repertoire showcased their versatile talent. It included “Gloria” by Ily Matthew Maniano, “Lux Aurumque” by Eric Whitacre, and “Kaamulan” by Robert Delgado. These pieces not only demonstrated their vocal prowess but also the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.

The Hainan Prize Choir Competition is part of the larger 3rd Hainan (21st Century Maritime Silk Road) Chorus Festival. Organized by the festival’s committee and the Asia China Affairs Department of INTERKULTUR, the competition aligns with the high standards of INTERKULTUR’s “World Choral Movement”.
This victory adds to the recent string of international accolades for Filipino choirs this year, including successes at the Busan Choral Festival and Competition in South Korea and the International Jean Sibelius Choir Competition in Finland.
