It is said that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” In this spirit, Good News Pilipinas presents a list of events commemorating the Anniversary of the Declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines. We join the call for the Filipino nation to never forget and never again allow the shutting down of news media, widespread suppression of the freedom of speech, gross violation of human rights, abuse of political power, and the loss of thousands of lives.
Fifty-two years ago on September 21, 1972, then-president Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. signed Proclamation No. 1081 and declared Martial Law rule, ushering in this dark chapter of Philippine history.
This 2024, academic communities and people’s organizations continue to lead awareness and education campaigns to keep the memory alive, lest the people forget and repeat history.
