The Philippine Azkals claimed their first win at the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup Asian Qualifiers, trouncing host team Guam, 4-1, on September 10, 2019.
The Philippine Men’s Football Team controlled the pace early in the game with a goal by Angel Guirado followed by another goal by Patrick Reichelt, giving the Azkals the lead at 2-0.
Guam scored a goal with a 67th-minute penalty but the Philippines quickly took back the momentum with a goal by Stephan Schrock and another by Patrick Strauss.
The Azkals’ resounding beating of Guam at the GFA National Training Center in Dededo, Guam, redeemed the team after earlier losing to Syria in their September 5 first qualifiers match held at the Panaad Stadium, Bacolod province in the Philippines.
The Azkals are vying for a berth to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and will compete in China in October.
The Azkals booked a historic berth for the AFC Asian Cup and were praised for their sportsmanship at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Championships.
