The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) continues to prioritize innovative solutions in agriculture and aquaculture through the Agri-Aqua Innovation Pitch Fest where the Philippines’ state universities and centers presented solutions to pressing industry concerns.

From bio-leather to buro booster, meat tenderizer, sago pith extraction, and pili postharvest machines, the pitched ideas celebrated innovative solutions and showcased cutting-edge technologies in the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sectors.

The Agri-Aqua Pitch Fest was organized by the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARD) in collaboration with Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) and the Association of PAQE Professionals (APP), and held at the Royce Hotel in Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga, on August 16, 2024.

In his speech, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. urged support for state universities and consortia involved in challenging norms and driving positive change. He highlighted the event’s role in making science accessible and inspiring innovation. “The Agri-Aqua Innovation Pitch Fest is a powerful reminder that science is truly accessible to everyone, especially those who are driven to make a meaningful impact in the world,” he said.

Solidum also emphasized the importance of aligning technology with business needs. “To all potential technology adopters and investors, as you explore the wide array of sciences available, please consider where to direct your efforts and support. We hope you find the technology that will best match the needs of your businesses in your field,” Solidum stated.

The DOST official advised researchers to focus on solving problems rather than falling in love with their solutions. “Fall in love with the problems, not your solutions… If we are truly in love with the problem, we will do everything we can to solve it. But if we fall in love with our solutions… we become reluctant to share them. This slows down the adoption of our technologies,” he explained.

Dr. Robert H. Lo, a board member of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, supported Solidum’s message, stressing the need for local inventors to understand the urgency that drives entrepreneurs. He also highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between research and entrepreneurship to ensure that technologies have a significant impact.

DOST-PCAARRD Executive Director Reynaldo V. Ebora acknowledged the country’s natural wealth and the resilience of its people but also recognized the significant challenges faced by farmers and fisherfolk. “These challenges require bold and innovative solutions. The Agri-Aqua Innovation Pitch Fest is our collective commitment to addressing these challenges head-on. It is a platform where research meets real-world applications,” said Ebora.
