The Philippine flag has been personified into a Japanese anime character named Rizal in time for the country’s 121st Independence Day celebration.
“Rizal” was introduced by the website World Flags as part of the promotion of the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
World Flags social media posted a photo of Rizal wearing white in a Japanese samurai-inspired armor colored blue, red and gold. The title was “Maharurika” – presumably referring to the Filipino term, Maharlika.

World Flags tweeted, “Philippines,you are here today! I’m going to summon the sun! Philippines is one of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)! The name is Rizal.”
The armor also features the country’s symbols, the three stars and a sun.

Rizal as the personified Philippine flag holds a rifle called “Mindanao” that shoots the bullet of hope (pearl) from his right hand. Rizal holds in his left hand a fan imprinted with the country’s national flag called “Rusonhasshu” – presumably referring to Luzon.
Rizal is also described to have a special skill in esculma (eskrima) that is a traditional martial arts in the Philippines.

The anthropomorphized version of Philippine flag Rizal is one of the many characters created by World Flags to promote Japanese culture and to build excitement in the upcoming Olympics that will be held in Japan.
