Theatre artist Patrick Mayuyu has received the 2018 Aubrey Award for his choreography on the Tony-award-winning musical “Spring Awakening.”
The 53rd edition of Aubrey Awards given by the San Diego Association of Community Theaters (ACT) recognized the Filipino-American Mayuyu with the Aubrey Award for Best Choreography for his work on the OnStage Playhouse production of the musical that features music by Duncan Sheik and is based on the play by Frank Wedekind about teenagers grappling with their blossoming sexualities.
The San Diego ACT annual event celebrates the actors, designers, and production teams who contributed to the 2017-2018 theatre season.
Mayuyu posted on Facebook pictures of his Aubrey Award trophy inscribed with his name.
The actor-singer-dancer-performer, born and raised in San Diego, California, recently co-founded the MaArte Theatre Collective together with 5 other young Pilipinx-American theatre artists who “felt a deep lack of Asian – but especially Filipino – representation in theatre, media, music, and other storytelling mediums.
