Panay Island in Western Visayas has been listed in Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards for Popular Destinations in Asia.
The Philippine island, home of the world-famous Boracay, was ranked No. 20 among 25 of the year 2020’s “Best of the Best” destinations preferred by world travelers.
“From can’t-miss iconic cities to new surprises, these are the spots that travelers raved about most on Tripadvisor this year,” Tripadvisor introduced the annual regional list topped by Bali in Indonesia.
“Turquoise lagoons, waterfalls and perfect beaches — this is Panay Island,” described the popular travel site.
“For years, Panay Island has shown up on most travelers’ maps as a stop-over on the way to Boracay’s white sand beaches. Turns out, they were missing something truly special — a hidden gem with a rich ecotourism ethos, where turquoise lagoons and waterfalls are just the start,” the site added.
Tripadvisor reviewers also recommended White Beach, Camina Balay nga Bato, Yapak Beach (Puka Shell Beach), among places to see on the island.
Tripadvisor’s 18th annual Travelers’ Choice Awards released in late July is based on reviews and opinions collected in 2019 before the worldwide lockdown on travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“This has been a tough year for our industry, but the global desire to go and explore, whether the destination is an hour away or across the world, remains strong,” said Lindsay Nelson, chief experience and brand officer at Tripadvisor.
Earlier this year in February, Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards named Cebu Island among the World’s 25 Trending Destinations and Luzon as the World’s Top 2 Trending Destination.
