The Palawan State University (PSU) team of petroleum engineering students will represent the Philippines in the 2021 Petrobowl World Championship.
The PSU team advanced to the international championship after finishing third in the Petrobowl Asia Pacific Regional Qualifiers (APRQ) in July, the only Philippine university to make it in the top five this year.
PSU competed in three sets of single-elimination rounds, winning against China University of Petroleum (90-25), Indonesia’s UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta (95-55), and the Philippines’ Batangas State University (85-45) in the quarterfinal.
The Philippines’ representatives in the Petrobowl World Championship are PSU students Joshua Manginsay Guzman, Gwen Arianne Santillan Recoco, Mary Antonette Macariola, Prince Panes, and Faye Molina.
The team is coached by Engr. Jared Ignacio, a faculty member of PSU’s Petroleum Engineering Department.
The PetroBowl competition matches Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) student chapter teams against one another in a fast-paced quiz competition covering technical and non-technical aspects of the oil and gas industry, which will take place this year from September 4 to 5, 2021.
PSU also won third place in the Petrobowl Asia Pacific Regional Qualifiers in 2019.
Manila, Cebu, Negros schools have advanced to the 15th FedEx Express/Junior Achievement International Trade Challenge (JA ITC) Asia-Pacific finals while Filipino math students bagged top honors in the 62nd International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) and PSHS, ValMaSci students bagged medals at the 33rd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Singapore.
