Four-time Olympic diving gold medalist Greg Louganis was in the Philippines for the season opener of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2019 and has declared the country as his favorite spot.
Louganis was on official duty as the Sports Director of the World Series and came to El Nido, Palawan for the April 13 Philippine leg of the high dive adventure sport, the first time the country hosted the competition.
Asked ‘What’s your favorite spot?’ I have to say it’s Oman and the Philippines. They’re neck-to-neck,” Louganis said in a Philippine Star report about the towering limestone formations and emerald waters which formed the backdrop of the competition.
“But here you really feel you’re embraced by nature. And that’s what cliff diving is all about. It’s the backdrop. The gorgeous clear waters. It’s stunning,” the Olympic diving champion described the El Nido site of the cliff diving season opener which featured Fil-Aussie Xantheia Pennisi, the first high diver of Filipino descent to compete in the series.
Pennisi, diving 21m for the first time in the Philippines since she started competing internationally in 2018, emerged in 7th spot in the Women’s division.
Thank Greg Louganis for his kind words and tell us your own El Nido, Palawan experience in the comments below to declare to the world the beauty of the Philippines!
