The Negros Occidental Little League team from the Philippines earned the Team Sportsmanship Award at the Little League Softball World Series (LLSWS) in Greenville, North Carolina.
The Asia-Pacific Region Champion Team from Bacolod City was named the 2022 Girls with Game Team Sportsmanship Award Recipient for “displaying sportsmanship both on and off the field throughout its time in the series” which ran from August 9-15.
Twelve teams comprised of 8 U.S. teams and 4 International teams formed the 2022 LLSWS edition.
“On behalf of all of us at the Little League Softball World Series, we are honored to present the 2022 Girls with Game Team Sportsmanship Award to Negros Occidental Little League,” said Ashlea Nash, Little League Director of Softball Development.
“Since the moment they arrived, the players of Negros Occidental Little League have shown the excitement and sportsmanship that makes the Little League World Series experience so meaningful and have proven what it means to be Girls with Game.”
This is only the second time the Girls with Game Team Sportsmanship Award was presented after the 2021 edition of the Little League Softball World Series.
The Little League Girls with Game Initiative, originally launched in 2019, is dedicated to “honoring all the girls and women who have made the Little League program what it is today and those who inspire the future generation of female participants at every level”.
Members of the Little League International Staff, LLSWS Tournament Committee, participating managers, volunteers, and media were given the chance to vote on which team they believed should be recognized for this award.
In addition, through its partnership with Athletes Unlimited, Little League International was able to have Athletes Unlimited Softball players contribute to the voting to ultimately determine this year’s recipient.
Prior to the start of the 2022 Little League Softball World Series, all 12 participating teams gathered together for the first-ever Girls with Game Celebration to officially kick off this year’s event with a night of fun and excitement.
The Filipino girls were aiming to become the first team from the ASPAC region to claim the LLSWS championship but failed to make a podium finish after battling Virginia for the bronze trophy.
The Philippines’ Bulacan softbelles finished in the Top 3 of the Little League World Series 2019 edition. In the same year, Team Philippines also won the Junior League Softball Asia Pacific Championship.
