A Technovation Hub to help develop bamboo and forest-based products by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) has been opened by the Department of Science and Technology – Forest Product Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) in Los Baños, Laguna.
The Philippines’ new MSME service facility was inaugurated on July 5, 2021, in an online ceremony as part of DOST-FPRDI’s 64th-anniversary milestones and mission to help businesses bounce back from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The DOST-FPRDI Technovation Hub features three of the Institute’s newest facilities:
- Forest Products Innovation and Training Center – equipped with state of the art precision machines to create high-end furniture and housing components
- Bamboo Musical Instruments Processing Center – houses line of processing equipment for manufacturing purposes and for improving the processing, durability, aesthetics, and sound quality of select bamboo musical instruments
- Forest ProductsTechnology Business Incubator (TBI) – offers temporary use of office space and equipment, training and conference room facilities, and the use of processing equipment for its incubation projects
The Philippine bamboo was upgraded to a high-value crop status in 2020.
FPRDI has been helping innovate the Philippines’ bamboo musical instruments while providing solutions to the pandemic with bamboo-framed face shields and bamboo-based antimicrobial soaps and hand mists.
