Davao’s Mishael Jacob Pueblas made history by winning the Top 3 design for the Laussane 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Medal Competition.
Pueblas’ design “Wings of a Champion” is one of the three submissions which stood out among nearly 300 entries from 60 different countries.
Lausanne 2020 President Virginie Faivre and ERACOM (Lausanne Art School) Dean Viviane Morey, IOC Member Danka Bartekova, and a panel of judges from Young Change-Makers and Young Reporters picked the winning designs.
Here are the winners of the medal design competition:
1st: Zakea Page, New Zealand – “Beauty in Diversity”
2nd: Johan Poizat, France – “The Star of the Alps is You”
3rd: Mishael Jacob Pueblas, Philippines – “Wings of a Champion”
Pueblas shared about his winning design on his Facebook account.
“The medal is entitled “Wings of a Champion”. The design is inspired by the Olympic motto: “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (Faster, Higher, Stronger) which are all the characteristics of “wings.”
The design captures the movements of an athlete that unleashes those “wings” while in action, and the very “wings” they spread out after the win.
The 16 stripes represent the 16 disciplines of the games. The 5 random circles symbolise the podium dedicated to the champions from all 5 continents.
The space on top represent the sky which symbolises the lofty ambition of our youth. Turned upside down, the 16 stripes become the beautiful mountains of Lausanne where the Wings of a Champion will soar high as it reaches for the Olympic dream.”
The 30 year-old Filipino designer also shared that he has been joining design contests for almost 10 years and is happy for making history in the Olympics as the Filipino to have placed 3rd in the medal design competition.
Mishael Jacob Pueblas also thanked his 3D modeller Ken Feliscuzo and dedicated his win to his design students.
