Filipino bowler Merwin Tan finished in first place in the Boys’ Singles event at the 20th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships held in Malaysia, effectively ending the Philippines’ 7-year wait for a gold medal in the international sports competition.
Tan hit 1,352 pinfalls in 6 rounds to win against his Australian opponent.
Team Philippines also won Silver at the Boys’ Team Event held in Kuching, Sarawak in April.
The 19-year-old Tan led the Philippine team composed of Kayle Abad, Patrick Nuqui, and Kenzo Umali, coached by Biboy Rivera.
“I just did my best in every game, every frame and every shot. I really needed to score at least a 200 in the last game and I’m really happy I was able to do just that,” Tan in a Philippine Star report adding, “This gold medal is a blessing for me especially that I’m playing my last year here.”
It was Alexis Sy who last gave the Philippines a gold medal at the AYC held in Egypt back in 2012.
Congratulate Team Philippines for raising the Philippine flag at the 20th Asian Youth Championships!
