Marvel Comics Filipina superhero, Wave, is coming home to Cebu accompanied by other Marvel Universe heroes and designer Leinil Yu.
Wave, the alias of Pearl Pangan who hails from Cebu, was created by American Comic book writer as part of the Agents of Atlas comics series and designed by renowned artist, Leinil Yu. She was introduced in March at the South by Southwest conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.
The Marvel Comics character of Pearl Pangan was born in the Philippines and was a high school champion swimmer with Olympics aspiration.
AlonTech recruited Pangan but she was accidentally exposed to an illegal biotech chemical. The exposure gave Pangan Hydrokinesis – telekinetic powers cover water molecules. Pearl Pangan then began her superhero duties as Wave, a member of the Agents of Atlas.
Wave is seen on “War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas” as a defender of the Philippine Sea.
In an earlier interview with the Philippines-based Yu, Good News Pilipinas learned that Wave’s designer coincidentally lived in Cebu during his pre-teen years.
Leinil Yu explains his role in the creation of the Filipina superhero saying, “Although I supplied her visual look, her core characteristics were already conceived in text by Greg Pak, the writer known for bringing Asian heroes to the forefront, including her being Cebuana.”
“He knows his stuff. I gave Wave her fins, the sword, the head gear and the tech look,” adds Yu. Wave’s weapon is based on Lapu Lapu’s sword, the Kampilan.
Wave will headline the celebration for Marvel’s 80th year anniversary at the shores of SM Seaside City Cebu on September 1, 2019. Leinil Yu will grace an autograph signing event with Marvel Games Senior Producer for Asia Danny Koo.
The official introduction of Wave at the Marvel Future Fight Game Play will also be held during Marvel’s 80th Anniversary celebrations from September 1 to 11 at the Mountain Wing Atrium of SM City Cebu.
The successful debut of Wave has brought forth a new Filipina superhero in AERO #3.
SEND cheers in the comments below for Leinil Yu and Wave for showcasing Filipino excellence in the Marvel Universe!
