Multi-awarded Filipino actress Maricel Soriano has joined the cast of the upcoming romantic-comedy film “Re-Live: A Tale of an American Island Cheerleader” which is led by Filipina-American stars Rain Valdez and Rachel Leyco.

Soriano will portray the role of Thelma, the mother of Valdez and Leyco’s characters who play sisters Rowena and Rochelle in the movie, according to a Variety report.

Co-written by Valdez and Leyco, the film tells the story of a transgender Hollywood actress who learns that her high school reunion is hosting a “Do-Over Week,” and returns to her home island of Guam to finally live her childhood dream of becoming a cheerleader. In her homecoming, she learns how to value the family that she left behind.

The Fil-Am filmmakers said that their film aims to highlight the value of diversity and raise awareness against anti-Asian and anti-trans hate crimes around the world.

“Having a legendary Filipino actress like Maricel Soriano strengthens our commitment to telling our stories from our authentic experiences and for our Filipinx diaspora,” Valdez and Leyco told Variety in a statement on January 22, 2022.

“Now more than ever, this empowers us to further highlight our communities at a time when visibility must be taken to new heights to fight against the rise of anti-trans and anti-Asian violence,” the filmmakers added.

The movie is reportedly set to begin filming in Hawai’i and Guam in November 2022.

Filipino-American actress Ivory Aquino is also making history by being cast in the upcoming HBO Max movie “Batgirl” as Alysia Yeoh, the first transgender character to appear in a live-action DC film.
