Maria Ressa has been honored with the Justice For Journalists award by the Amal and George Clooney Foundation for Justice’s first-ever Albie Awards in New York, U.S.A.

Filipino Nobel Peace Prize winner Ressa was among the inaugural recipients of the awards which recognized courageous defenders of justice around the world who are at great risk for what they do.

The Filipino journalist was presented with the Justice For Journalists award by veteran actress Meryl Streep at the star-studded awards ceremony held at the New York Public Library.

The award given to the CEO and co-founder of the Rappler news network cited her fearless reporting which exposed “government corruption and human rights violations in the Philippines”.

“Ressa, a 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner and a client of Amal Clooney, currently faces a lifetime behind bars for her journalism,” a statement from the Clooney Foundation for Justice reads.

Ressa and the other awardees were honored in the event attended by human rights defenders, journalists, leaders, and celebrities in New York on September 29, 2022.

In attendance were celebrities and notable personalities such as Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep, Oscar Isaac, Dua Lipa, John Oliver, Julia Roberts, and Nadia Murad, among many others.

Named after Justice Albie Sachs, who is widely recognized for working to end apartheid in South Africa, the Albie Awards honored courageous defenders of justice who are at great risk for what they do.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice was founded by Amal and George Clooney with its aim to wage justice and create a world where human rights are protected and no one is above the law.

Ressa was named co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for Press Freedom in October 2021 along with Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov. She has received various recognitions for her work defending press freedom in the Philippines, including the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize, among many others.
