Filipino singer Marcelito Pomoy surprised the judges and audience of “America’s Got Talent (AGT) : The Champions” with his unique solo performance of a duet by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli and earned himself a spot in the talent show’s four semifinalists.
Pomoy’s cover version of “The Prayer” during the Got Talent auditions on January 14 showcased his dual voice that allowed him to sing switching from Dion’s female soprano parts then to Bocelli’s male tenor parts, effortlessly. He even sang fluently in Italian and English.
Pomoy advanced to the semifinals through the help of the AGT superfans. His wife, Joan, joined him on stage before and after the performance to support him.
His audition on AGT: The Champions earned Pomoy a standing ovation from the judges and continues to be the Number 1 trending audition video on Youtube.
AGT judge and comedian Howie Mandel said after the audition, “That was so unique. You are a wonderful beautifully singer with a young woman trapped inside of you”. Mandel even said that the singer is worthy of the Golden Buzzer and is an incredible singer.
Alesha Dixson said she wanted to see something different, something unique, and the Pomoy delivered what she was looking to see.
Heidi Klum was visibly excited as she said, “Honestly, this is one of the craziest thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life. Your voice, your range is just so out of this world”.
The show’s creator and lead judge Simon Cowell said that Marcelito’s “The Prayer” performance deserved a golden buzzer and a perfect score. “That was what I call a 10, a simple as that,” Cowell declared.
Netizens also anticipated the performance of Pomoy on AGT and congratulated the singer on social media. Twitter user @JNObico said “Finally!!! Been waiting for him to audition in an international contest!!! Marcelito Pomoy is in AGT The Champions everyone!”. Another twitter user @GloriaLaw5 said “Bravo! #MarcelitoPomoy Congratulation Standing Ovation!”
“America’s Got Talent: The Champions” brings together the world’s most talented, memorable and all-around fan-favorite acts from past seasons of AGT and the other Got Talent franchises, spanning 194 territories, competing to be declared the best of the best.
Each week showcases 10 acts with three acts from each week moving on to the Semifinals and one receiving a Golden Buzzer to advance straight to the Finals. The Semifinals will cut those 12 acts in half, and the six that continue will compete against the four Golden Buzzer recipients for the ultimate title of World Champion.
In America’s Got Talent: The Champions, voting is not open to the public. Advancing talent from each round is determined by the judge panel (Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Alesha Dixon and Howie Mandel) along with a select group of “superfans.”
In 2011, Marcelito Pomoy won Pilipinas Got Talent where he also sang The Prayer. In the AGT video shown before his performance, Marcelito Pomoy revealed how he joined the Pilipinas Got Talent contest to help him find his family. He was rendered an orphan at 7 years old when his father was sent to jail and his mother disappeared. Getting attention on the Got Talent show made it possible for his family to reunite during the finals show which he eventually won. The Got Talent win also paved the way for Pomoy to enter show business.
Since winning Got Talent, Pomoy has been part of the local television variety show “ASAP” and released recordings. In 2018, Pomoy was flown to the United States by American TV host Ellen DeGeneres who was amazed after seeing his video singing a live duet of both male and female voices.
Several Filipino talents have been making waves on Got Talent franchises, including dancer Ian Lodens who won Belgium’s Got Talent and shadow play group El Gamma Penumbra who won the inaugural Asia’s Got Talent.
Gwyneth Dorado, Gerphil Flores, and Junior New System also dominated the inaugural Asia’s Got Talent Grand Finals, with Junior New System also reaching the semis of the World’s Got Talent in China. Power Duo, Junior Good Vibes, and Shadow Ace also dominated the 2nd edition of Got Talent Grand Finals.
