Manny Pacquiao again raised the Filipino flag in international boxing today after winning the unified World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight Super Championship title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The 40-year-old Pacquiao reigned supreme as he outscored the younger 30-year-old Keith Thurman who suffered the first loss in his boxing career in the match billed as the Most Important Fight of 2019.
Pacquiao actually knocked down Thurman in Round 1 but the American recovered to continue the fight. Pacquiao kept his composure throughout the 12 rounds, throwing punches including a big body shot in the 10th and evading blows with his quick footwork – even showing a bit of the iconic Ali shuffle on the ring.
The 8-Division champion won his 62nd fight by split decision. Pacquiao improves his fight card to 62-7-2 with 39 Knock Outs after he took two judges who scored him with 115-112. The third judge scored the fight in favor of Thurman, 114-113, giving the American a fight card of 29-1 with 22 KOs.
Manny Pacquiao’s new championship title unifies his previous WBA interim title, after winning the WBA Welterweight Championship against Lucas Matthysse in July 2018, with the WBA Welterweight title that Thurman has held since 2015.
