The 18-year-old Fernandez lost the first set but came back to dominate the 28-year-old Linette, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, in an impressive debut.
Leylah Annie Fernandez will next challenge the 47th-ranked and 29-year-old Polona Hercog in the second round matches.
