Filipino commercial director Ivan Guerrero’s “The Adventures of the USS Cardboard” design is now under development as an official LEGO set.
Guerrero’s new creation inspired by his own childhood memories garnered the highest number of fan votes and won first place in the recently concluded LEGO Ideas’ “Out of this World Space Builds” contest which announced winners on March 26, 2021.
As the Grand Prize winner of the contest, the Filipino filmmaker’s model will have the opportunity to be turned into the next Gift with Purchase set soon to be available in LEGO stores.
The winning entry is Ivan Guerrero’s second design to be approved by the toy bricks panel for production following the 123 Sesame Street playset he designed for LEGO last year.
According to Guerrero, his model called “The Adventures of the USS Cardboard” is influenced by his childhood memories of lazy afternoons spent playing with spaceships and cardboard boxes with his brother.
“My newest design on LEGO Ideas was greatly inspired by my own childhood memories of playing with cardboard boxes… like in this picture of me and my brother. Can you guess which one is me? (Hint: I did the LEGO Sesame Street set)😄” Ivan Guerrero wrote in a Facebook post.
The USS Cardboard starship is composed of 169 brick pieces and is “made of boxes, pillows, soda cans, toys, and other household items, all held together by the magic of duct tape and creativity.”
Another product idea by Guerrero called “Avatar: The Illuminated World of Pandora” has received 10,000 fan votes and is now under review by LEGO Ideas.
Ivan Guerrero is the second Filipino to receive the Danish toymaker’s approval, after Leandro Tayag’s fan design for Voltron which was adopted by LEGO in 2017.
The LEGO Ideas concept of UK-based radiographer Apollo Exconde is poised to become the fourth Filipino-designed LEGO toy. His LEGO toy Open MRI idea recently reached a milestone of 10,000 supporters that sent the medical toy design for review to have the idea turned into reality by the toy bricks manufacturer.
