Filipino international star Lea Salonga is featured in a soon-to-be released Penguin Random House book about famous actresses on Broadway
The multi-awarded Lea Salonga, who recently held her first solo concert series in the United Kingdom where she originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon, revealed on social media the news of the book’s upcoming release. Salonga tweeted on July 27, “To be listed along these women I consider legends is such an honor!”
The American publishing company’s “A is for Audra: Broadway’s Leading Ladies from A to Z,” written by John Robert Allman and illustrated by Peter Emmerich, is a children’s picture book for ages 3 to 7 that can be enjoyed by theater fans of all ages.
The alphabet book showcases the multi-awarded Lea Salonga along with Broadway’s legendary lead actresses including 6-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera, and Liza Minnelli.
“I’m so honored to be included among these fierce ladies – brought to life with such fun illustrations – in this wonderful book for little divas like my own!” said the Tony Award-winning and Grammy-nominated actress Lea Salonga in the book reviews section.
Described as “a showstopping rythmic alphabet book featuring your favorite leading ladies of the Broadway stage” the book is the first of its kind to be released.
Penguin Random House introduces the book “With their signature voices and iconic roles, these talented women have created some of the greatest moments in musical theater history. Broadway fans and theater lovers everywhere will give a standing ovation to this one-of-a-kind tribute full of toe-tapping rhymes, with illustrations as bright and beautiful as the shining lights on any marquee.”
Book writer Allman told Broadway.com, “This is the picture book I wished I could give friends’ kids. I hope it’s an overture that introduces the icons, shows, cast albums and Tony Awards performances I love so much to ‘Broadway Babies’ of all ages.”
“These glorious women and John’s clever prose inspired the illustrations in the book,” added illustrator Emmerich in the same report. “I approached each one with the same love and affection I feel for these legends. This is the book I wish I could have had as a Broadway-obsessed child.”
A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Penguin Randomhouse is scheduled to release the book about Broadway’s legendary leading ladies in November.
