The Philippines’ Lady Volcanoes completed a 100% sweep of all their games to win the Gold at the 2019 Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Trophy Series Cup held in Jakarta.
The Philippine Women’s National Rugby Team made sure they won the Gold this time after finishing with Silver medals at the 2018 Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens. The First Pacific Lady Volcanoes competed for two days and emerged champion after besting host team Indonesia, 26-7.
The Lady Volcanoes trounced the following teams on their way to secure the Gold:
- Laos (24-0)
- Qatar (27-0)
- India (19-12)
- Indonesia (26-7)
The Philippine team was hailed champion among 9 international teams who competed on August 10 and 11. The Philippines is now on top of the overall standings in Asia.
“We are delighted to get to the top tier of sevens in Asia,” said World Rugby Council Member and Philippines player Ada Milby in an Asia Rugby report about the games. “It was great to come out on top of such a competitive competition. All the teams have improved so much and it is so promising for the future of the sport in our region.”

The Lady Volcanoes competed in the Asia Rugby tournament as part of their preparations for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
“The 2019 SEA Games is our number one priority, so these events are extremely important to ensure we are on the right path. It’s a great opportunity for our athletes and our teams to showcase where they are currently, so we can test and measure what we need to do before the SEA Games in December” shared Jake Letts, the Volcanoes General Manager, in a Philippine Rugby report prior to winning the Asia Rugby.
