Filipino-American musician Francisco Martin dared to perform a Katy Perry song for his American Idol Top 10 bid and was rewarded by the judge’s approval of his live performance at home.
The 18-year-old from San Francisco, California chose to sing “Teenage Dream” popularized by Katy Perry in 2010 as he fought for a spot in the Top 10 of the singing competition.
Judge Luke Bryan who earlier declared Francisco a winner at his audition performance, admitted he was nervous, saying, “I was like, please do not let this kid cover a Katy song and mess it up. You didn’t man. You made it you, and you just have the magic. I’m jealous.”
“It was just so warming to watch you go on stage and take anybody’s song, especially a Katy Perry song on this show. Are you kidding me? You took the chance of life. But you turned it into your song. You made it your song. Congratulations you’re doing a great job,” judge Lionel Richie said.
“What a dice roll to do that song,” said Katy, approving the performance and telling Francisco that what he did really works and really beautiful.
“I thought it was really beautiful at the beginning. That one note that you hit was amazing, and then it was all the way uphill,” Perry said who, like the other judges and contestants, was also at home following the lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus disease in the United States. Perry was shown dressed up as a box of sanitizer.
“You did it real justice. Good job!” Perry added.
AI host Ryan Seacrest remarked that Francisco is humble, charming and so likeable.
“Francisco Martin, America! He has found his confidence. He wants to keep living his dream,” Seacrest said, thanking the Fil-Am singer for the performance. “At a time we really need to smile and have fun. Appreciate it, buddy,” Seacrest said in the AI video of Francisco Martin shown on April 27, 2020.
“Thank you so much for the constant love and support!!” Francisco posted on Instagram after the performance.
