This just in: Filipino Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez has won her first professional title at the Monterrey Open.
The 18-year-old junior tennis champion claimed her first professional championship title on March 22, 2021, (March 21 in Mexico) at the Abierto GNP Seguros final in Monterrey, Mexico.
The teenage Fernandez swept past all her opponents in the tourney before defeating Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic, 6-1, 6-4.
“The last game basically, especially the last two points, I was very nervous there,” Fernandez said in her post-match press conference reported by WTA Tour.
“But I just tried to calm myself, just think about the moment, and try to execute the plan as best as I can. I’m happy that the balls went in for me.”
Leylah Annie Fernandez now has a 7-1 career win-loss record in Monterrey where she competed as the youngest player in the main draw.
The young tennis sensation bested the following older players in the tournament on her way to the finals:
- won against 24-year-old Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the semifinals, 7-5, 7-5
- won against 22-year-old Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovak Republic in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-3
- won against 30-year-old Kristina Kucova of Slovak Republic in the Round of 16, 6-1, 6-4
- won against 29-year-old Coco Vandeweghe of the United States in the Round of 32, 6-3, 6-2
Born in Montreal, Quebec to an Ecuadorian father and a Filipino mother from Toronto, Fernandez is currently ranked #72 on WTA.
“It was a family effort for years,” Fernandez said. “I was very happy that the hard work and sacrifices that we’ve done since the beginning is paying off, and just hoping there will be many more.”
Leylah Annie Fernandez captured the French Open Junior Singles title in 2019 and won her French Open main draw debut match in 2020.
