Super Typhoon Carina (International name: Gaemi) intensified the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), causing widespread and continuous rains that flooded Luzon Island. Around 600,000 people were displaced and evacuated from their homes to safety in shelters.
On July 24, 2024, Carina dumped over 300mm of rainfall. Even though Carina left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on July 25, it will continue to affect Zambales, Bataan, and Pangasinan until July 27, according to DOST PAG-ASA.
The most affected areas include Metro Manila, Oriental Mindoro, Batangas, Cavite, Bataan, and Bulacan, now placed under states of calamity.
Private sector initiatives are complementing government relief efforts. Here are ways you can help the victims:
Community Kitchens by Community Pantry PH
Community Pantry PH, started by Patreng Non during the pandemic, has started community kitchens for Carina victims. As of now, 148 Community Kitchens provide hot meals to evacuees.
How to Help:
- Volunteer at a community kitchen by approaching the nearest evacuation center.
- Start your own Community Kitchen at a local evacuation center. For assistance, contact Novie Lim, Ella Marie Orito, or Shainee Dalɘ.
- Bring donations to evacuation centers. Ask the center or barangay about their needs. Suggested items include:
- Ready-to-eat food
- Toiletries (especially napkins, diapers)
- Clothes
- Blankets
