Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz swept the women’s 55-kilogram events to win 3 gold medals at the Roma 2020 Weightlifting World Cup, strengthening her bid for a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Diaz was hailed top podium finisher with her total lift of 212 kgs. after dominating the snatch event with 93-kg. lift and the jerk event with 119 kgs. during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held January 28, 2020, in Rome, Italy.
The two-time Olympics weightlifter is campaigning to improve her Rio Olympics silver with a gold when she returns to the quadrennial games scheduled from July 24 to August 9 in Tokyo, Japan.
On her way to the Roma 2020 Weightlifting World Cup, the 29-year-old Diaz picked up her first gold medal at the 30th Southeast Asian Games in December 2019, won 2 bronze medals at the World Weightlifting Championship in Thailand in September, and bagged triple silvers at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in April in China.
The Philippines’ top lifter also won the country’s first Asian Games gold medal in 2018 in Jakarta.
Hidilyn Diaz will again see action at another Olympic Qualifying tournament at the IWF Asian Championships in Kazakhstan on April 16-25.
