Filipino short film “Harana” has won the United States Narrative Short Competition Prize at the recently concluded 23rd annual Sarasota Film Festival (SFF).
The Frencheska Farr-starrer directed by Marie Jamora was named one of the winners of the hybrid film festival, which took place in Sarasota, Florida, from April 30 to May 9, 2021.
Jamora shared on Instagram that the short film had won a new Narrative prize, which comes on the heels of Harana’s success at The Micheaux Film Festival.
“AMAZING NEWS! #HaranaFilm has just won the US Narrative Short Competition Prize at the Sarasota Film Festival!!! 🏆 We thank @piattrodney and the Sarasota programmers and jurors for this great honor,” Marie Jamora wrote on May 13, 2021.
The 2020 short film Harana (formerly known as A Song For Myself) follows Maya (Farr), a cover band singer in a Las Vegas hotel and casino trying to connect with her daughter who is growing up in the Philippines without her.
The Sarasota Film Festival emphasizes the best in cinema alongside exciting programs and events, with more than 200 films screened each year including features, documentaries, shorts, and kid-friendly picks.
Filipina actress-singer Frencheska Farr earlier bagged the Outstanding Dramatic Actress award while “Harana” won in the Outstanding Music category at The Micheaux Film Festival in Los Angeles, California.
Filipino films that won top prizes in international film festivals include “Aswang” (Filipino for shape-shifting evil spirits) which conquered South Korea’s 12th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival and the Pangasinan student film “Sa Layag ng Bangkang Paurong” (The Boats That Sail Backwards) at the Fresh International Film Festival in Limerick, Ireland.
