Lea Salonga is starring together with the world’s musical stars in an online concert tribute to celebrate Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday.
The Broadway Royalty from the Philippines joins a star-studded lineup including Josh Groban, Jake Gyllenhaal, Neil Patrick Harris, Meryl Streep, and many more in the “Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration” to be aired today 8 AM (Philippine Time) on Broadway.com’s YouTube Channel (April 26 at 8:00PM ET).
Stephen Sondheim’s musical legacy to the world include the musicals “West Side Story”, “Into The Woods”, “A Little Night Music” with its “Send In The Clowns”, and “Sweeney Todd” where Lea Salonga starred recently in its Manila run.
Raúl Esparza hosts the live event directed by Broadway.com’s Paul Wontorek that is being presented in support of ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty), the organization conceived by the event’s musical director, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, and Juilliard students to transform the lives of youth using the most powerful tool they had: their art.
Broadway.com released the following list of stars on the Sondheim tribute concert:
The freshly announced stars set to perform include Annaleigh Ashford, Laura Benanti, Melissa Errico, Beanie Feldstein, Josh Groban, Jake Gyllenhaal, Neil Patrick Harris, Judy Kuhn, Linda Lavin, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Platt, Randy Rainbow, and Lea Salonga.
In addition, there will be special appearances from Victor Garber, Joanna Gleason, Nathan Lane, and Steven Spielberg.
They join the previously announced Meryl Streep, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Mandy Patinkin, Audra McDonald, Christine Baranski, Donna Murphy, Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Kelli O’Hara, Aaron Tveit, Maria Friedman, Katrina Lenk, Michael Cerveris, Brandon Uranowitz, Elizabeth Stanley, Chip Zien, Alexander Gemignani, Iain Armitage, Stephen Schwartz and, from the cast of Pacific Overtures at Classic Stage Company, Ann Harada, Austin Ku, Kelvin Moon Loh, and Thom Sesma.
Lea Salonga was recently featured on the Bayanihan Musikahan Facebook Live Concert Fundraiser for COVID-19 relief efforts and raised over 2 million pesos.
The celebrated Filipino singer-actress sang the 30th SEA Games theme “We Win As One” that was remade as the “We Heal As One” inspiration song for the world fighting COVID-19.
Salonga was in the United Kingdom for an Exclusive Concert Tour and her film “Yellow Rose” with fellow Miss Saigon star Eva Noblezada has been hailed around the world.
