Google Translate, a leading translation tool, has expanded its language offerings by adding 110 new languages, including five regional languages from the Philippines: Bikol, Hiligaynon, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, and Waray.
Before the update, Google Translate included three of the nation’s languages: Filipino, Cebuano, and Ilocano.
The update increases to 133 the total supported languages that can be translated on the Google Translate application.
The Google report states that the new update benefits over 660 million people with access to information and connections in their native tongue.

PaLM 2 Unlocks Diverse Language Support
Google’s advanced AI model, PaLM 2, drives this significant expansion, excelling in learning closely related languages. This allows Google Translate to bridge communication gaps for various communities, including:
- Regional Filipino Languages: 5 Newly added languages from Luzon and the Visayas.
- Major World Languages: Notable additions include Cantonese, the Shahmukhi variety of Punjabi, and Tok Pisin.
- Indigenous Languages: Languages like Afar and NKo, supported by volunteer contributions.
- Revitalized Languages: Manx, a Celtic language, now gaining support.
This expansion supports Google’s 1,000 Languages Initiative, with a quarter of the new additions coming from Africa. Google Translate now offers the most extensive selection of African languages to date.
Google prioritized the most commonly used forms, such as Southern Vlax Romani, while incorporating elements from other dialects for a comprehensive experience. Ongoing partnerships with linguists and native speakers ensure continuous improvement.

Google’s Gboard has also preserved the Philippines’ Baybayin and other native scripts.
