The 2024 Webometrics Ranking has revealed the performance of Philippine universities on a global stage, highlighting academic excellence and open access to knowledge of 363 local institutions. Leading in the Philippines are the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, De La Salle University Manila (DLSU), and the UP System, showcasing their significant web presence and academic prowess.

This edition of the bi-annual global ranking places UP Diliman at the forefront nationally and 856th worldwide, topping the rankings in its web presence’s impact (1st) and excellence (1st). The flagship UP campus is the only Philippine institution in the top 1000 global schools among 31,000 global schools from 200 countries.

De La Salle University Manila stands out as well, securing the second spot nationally and 1657th worldwide, with impressive rankings in impact (4th), openness (2nd), and academic excellence (2nd).

The UP System follows, ranking third nationally and 1914th globally, excelling in openness indicators (1st). The country’s premier state university system notched seven spots on the Webometrics Ranking measuring HEIs for academic excellence, impactful research, and commitment to open access to knowledge.

Other Philippine universities making it to the top 10 include:

  • Ateneo de Manila University in Katipunan is at World Rank #2177, 2nd in impact, and 5th in openness and excellence.
  • University of Santo Tomas is at World Rank #2620, 5th in impact, 4th in openness, and 7th in excellence.
  • University of San Carlos is at World Rank #3420, 6th in impact, and 10th in openness and excellence.
  • University of the Philippines Manila is at World Rank #3437, 10th in impact, and 3rd in excellence.
  • Mapua University is at World Rank #3458, 16th in terms of impact, 7th in openness, and 9th in excellence.
  • Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology is at World Rank #3543, 31st in terms of impact, 6th in openness, and 8th in excellence.
  • Visayas State University is at World Rank #4200, 13th in terms of impact, 11th in openness, and 12th in excellence.

This ranking of universities uses webometric (all missions) and bibliometric (research mission) indicators to measure open access to the knowledge generated by the university.

The Webometrics Ranking, administered by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), assesses universities based on their web impact, research excellence, and commitment to open-access knowledge. It employs a comprehensive methodology, with a 50% emphasis on web visibility or impact, 40% on academic excellence, and 10% on transparency or openness.

UP has consistently led the national rankings, reinforcing its status as a beacon of academic excellence and global impact in the Philippines. In 2023, UP led the 365 local universities. In 2020, UP also headlined the 277 Philippine universities recognized by Webometrics for their outstanding web content and impact.
