In the constellation of Hollywood, a new star is shining brightly, illuminating the path for aspiring artists and bringing a breath of fresh Filipino air to the global scene. Sam Morelos, the 17-year-old Filipino-American sensation, has garnered the admiration of international viewers for her role as Nikki in Netflix’s “That ’90s Show,” the anticipated sequel to the iconic “That ’70s Show.” Born in Los Angeles to Quezon City immigrants, Sam is a first-generation Filipino American proudly championing her roots in her flourishing career.
In an exclusive interview with Rico Hizon on The Final Word on CNN Philippines, Sam confessed her astonishment at the sudden catapult to fame. “Oh my gosh, it’s so surreal. I’m pinching myself every day,” she said. Indeed, Sam’s journey from answering an open casting call flyer at her school to joining the ranks of Hollywood stars is an inspiring tale.
The ’90s Show has been a remarkable stepping stone, echoing the impact its predecessor had on launching the careers of Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Topher Grace. “Very, very great company and it’s it seems like really big shoes to fill, but they’re wonderful, wonderful people and very supportive,” Sam shared with a tone of reverence and excitement.
Sam’s role as Nikki, a laser-focused, witty, and ambitious character, resonates with her own drive and dedication. “We both share qualities of knowing what we want out of life and knowing how to get it,” she told Rico Hizon. In balancing her acting commitments and challenging Grade 12 studies, the talented teenager is clearly as ambitious and focused as her character.
Morelos, ever proud of her heritage, is thrilled by the rising representation of Filipinos in Hollywood. “I think that the industry is evolving for the better,” she said, “and I’m so grateful to be a part of this and to be able to represent my community as a first-generation Filipino American.”
There’s no sign of Sam slowing down as her star continues to ascend. The first season of “That ’90s Show” has enjoyed such a successful run that it has been renewed for a second season, where Morelos will continue to captivate audiences with her compelling performance. In addition, she will make her Disney debut as Rapunzel’s daughter, Zelle, in “Pocketwatch,” an offshoot of “Descendants: The Rise of Red.”

Sam’s achievements also extend to the stage. Notably, she performed a solo concert with the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO), the only Filipino symphony orchestra outside the Philippines. This June, she will join as the first Special Guest Panelist for the 10th Filipino Hollywood Actors Panel, further cementing her growing reputation.
Offering advice to young Filipinas and Filipino Americans, she said, “Pour yourself into your dreams and don’t give up because the opportunities will find you.” For Sam Morelos, the doors have indeed opened, and we can’t wait to see how this fresh-faced star will continue to illuminate the path for others following in her footsteps.
