A former security guard in Bulacan province has fulfilled his dream of becoming a teacher at 45 years old after finishing his college degree with Magna Cum Laude honors.
Edwin Salvador pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and graduated with top academic honors from the Bulacan Agricultural State College, proving that it’s never too late to follow one’s dreams.
Growing up poor, Salvador told GMA News that he set aside his dream when he had to stop studying to support his three siblings and later his own family. However, he did not give up hope and decided to go back to school to complete his education and finally earn his degree to become a teacher.
While attending college, Salvador juggled studying and his work as a security guard, as an aircon technician, and as a plumber, among many others, to earn a living for his family.
The 45-year-old father’s inspiring story recently went viral on social media after his daughter shared his graduation video.
“Security Guard, Tagalinis at tagagawa ng aircon, electric fan, etc noon. Ngayon graduate na ng BEED plus Magna Cum laude at the age of 45. Congrats Pa!” Mary Angelica Salvador wrote in the caption.
The viral video shows Salvador barely holding back tears after finally receiving his diploma, several years after having to put his studies and dreams on hold.

The former security guard graduated with the second top Latin academic honors during the June 2022 graduation ceremony of Bulacan Agricultural State College.
This year, Salvador marks another milestone in his life as he begins work as a teacher at a private school in his province.
Edwin Salvador encouraged everyone to work hard to achieve their dreams, adding that it’s not too late to pursue them.
“Magsikap lang po kayo, humingi kayo ng tulong sa Panginoon. Doon naman sa mga pamilya ng mga tao na gustong mag-aral, suportahan niyo po yung mahal niyo sa buhay kasi walang magtutulungan kung hindi kayo kayo,” Edwin Salvador told GMA News.
Filipino students who persevered in the face of adversity include new senior high school graduate 91-year-old Federico “Lolo Pedring,” Bentayen, Sr., and another Magna Cum Laude working graduate Francis Jan Ax Valerio.
