As 2024 unfolds, Filipinos are again urged to sync their clocks for its annual National Time Consciousness Week held January 1-7. This initiative champions punctuality and respect for time, urging Filipinos to align with the Philippine Standard Time (PhST).
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) spearheads this nationwide synchronization effort. The DOST, along with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), plays a crucial role in ensuring all clocks across the country are set to PhST.
Enacted in 2013, the PhST Act (Republic Act No. 10535) mandates all government agencies and broadcasting companies to display and adhere to PhST. It also calls for educational campaigns about the importance of time in schools, fostering a culture of punctuality.
This year, the campaign focuses on the youth, highlighting the significance of time management for their future success. The DOST campaign is committed to teaching young Filipinos the importance of being timely and recognizing its impact on personal and professional growth.
DOST’s media release highlights the challenges of modern distractions and the often-underestimated effects of poor time management on personal and professional relationships.

The science behind PhST involves a rubidium atomic clock, synchronized with the Coordinated Universal Time (UCT) since 2003. This clock receives signals from GPS satellites, ensuring constant alignment with the UCT. This technological precision is crucial for accurate navigation and various modern applications.
Citizens can synchronize their timepieces with the official Oras Pinas by visiting the DOST-PAGASA website at this link.
In previous years, DOST time consciousness campaigns showed how adhering to PhST can boost productivity and lessen stress. This year’s campaign continues to build on these benefits, emphasizing the collective responsibility to respect and value time.
