Filipino surfers John Mark “Marama” Tokong and Roger Casugay ruled the waves to win gold and bronze medals at the Phuket Beach Festival held at the Kata Beach in Phuket, Thailand.
Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist Marama Tokong emerged as the champion of the international surfing competition after beating Indonesia’s Nyoman Satria Mukti in the Men’s Shortboard Final.
Tokong struck gold after ending with a combined 15.30 score against Nyoman’s 13.40 in the final.
SEA Games surfer hero Roger Casugay placed third in the tilt and took home a bronze in the Men’s Longboard.
The San Fernando, La Union native earlier received the Pierre de Coubertin Act of Fair Play trophy in recognition of his heroic deed during the 2019 SEA Games, where he saved a fellow competitor from drowning.
The Phuket Beach Festival 2022 International Surfing Competition was organized by the Thailand Surfing Federation and Southeast Asia Surfing Association from August 23 to 28, 2022.
The event sanctioned by the Asian Surf Cooperative also hosted a food expo, music, live art, and a beach party, aside from the surfing competition.
Filipino athletes making the country proud include Ernest John “EJ” Obiena who recently defeated pole vault’s World No. 1 in Belgium, and Muaythai athletes who won 10 medals for the Philippines at the 2022 International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) Youth World Championships.
