Filipino students proudly brought home medals and honors from the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the oldest international science Olympiad. The Philippine delegation achieved one silver medal, three bronze medals, and two honorable mention awards, adding to the country’s recognition since it began participating in the global contest in 1988.
Six high school math enthusiasts represented the Philippines among 609 students from 108 countries and territories at the 65th IMO, held from July 11 to 22 in Bath, United Kingdom. The Philippines finished at rank No. 50, a drop from the historic best team score at 26th place at the Japan IMO in 2023 but an improvement from 55th place at the Oslo IMO in 2022.
The country’s representatives, selected through training camps and assessments at the University of the Philippines Diliman, earned the following honors:
- Silver Medal: Jerome Austin Te, Jubilee Christian Academy, replicating his silver medal from the 2023 IMO.
- Bronze Medal: Alvann Walter Paredes Dy, Saint Jude Catholic School, repeating his bronze medal win at the 64th IMO.
- Bronze Medal: Luke Sebastian Sy, Grace Christian College, a first-time participant at the IMO.
- Bronze Medal: Filbert Ephraim Wu, Victory Christian International School, previously a silver medalist at the 2023 IMO.
- Honorable Mention: Ervin Joshua Bautista, Southville International School and Colleges, a first-time participant at the IMO.
- Honorable Mention: Mohammad Nur Casib, Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus, bronze medalist in the 2022 and 2023 IMO.

Team Leader Hazel Joy Shi of UP Diliman and Deputy Leader Kerish Villegas of Ateneo de Manila University led the Philippines’ IMO Team. The team’s participation in the IMO was a collaborative effort of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP) and the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
The IMO was established in 1959 in Romania and is the most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students. It is held annually in various host countries, with each country allowed a maximum of six contestants, alongside a Leader and Deputy Leader to evaluate and coordinate scores.
