Filipino-Kiwi Kit Thompson has been declared Best Actor at the recently concluded 54th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival.
The film festival announced the Filipino-Kiwi actor’s win in the Panorama Asia category in a Facebook post on April 27, 2021.
Thompson was recognized for his award-winning performance in the 2019 iWant Original film, Belle Douleur.
“Kit Thompson’s charming performance in ‘Belle Douleur’ was easy to fall in love with and earned him the Remi award for BEST ACTOR (Panorama Asia) at WorldFest 54!” the festival wrote.
The actor won over fellow candidates Hideyuki Kawahara and Yuh Kamiya from Japan, who starred in the film, Sin-Gone Irony.
Kit Thompson shared his new accomplishment on Instagram and thanked film director Joji Alonso and Belle Douleur co-star Mylene Dizon who was nominated for Best Actress in the same festival.
“Everyone has their own turn. I honestly didn’t think I’d win best actor. I was already happy when I found out I was nominated for best actor,” Kit Thompson wrote in an Instagram post.
Belle Douleur tells the story of a 45-year-old psychologist (Mylene) who falls in love with a 20-year-old musician (Kit). The film premiered at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, where it won the Audience Choice award.
The WorldFest Houston is a competitive film festival based in Texas. It was founded in 1961 and is one of the longest-running independent film festivals around the world.
Filipino actors who recently received international acting accolades include “Gameboys” star Elijah Canlas who won in Italy, Arjo Atayde who gave the Philippines its 1st-ever Best Actor win at the 2020 Asian Academy Creative Awards (AAA), and Louise Abuel who won in Bangladesh.
