Three images on the schooling or distance learning setup of Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic have won major awards in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Photo Contest.
Filipino photographer Froiland Rivera’s “Online Learning” photo entry won the first prize out of over 1,200 photo submissions from 16 member economies that participated in this year’s competition.
Roxanne Paraiso’s “A Small Act is A Huge Help” came in second place.
Robert Marrel Dela Vega won the Popular Choice Award with his photo submission named “Pandemic: Education and innovation” after receiving the most likes on APEC’s social media accounts.
The winning photos of the Filipino lensmen that depict the new normal of education in the Philippines were revealed by the photo contest on November 8, 2021.
The annual APEC Photo Contest cited Rivera and Dela Vega’s photo entries for showcasing “innovation and digitalization as a tool for recovery by capturing remote learning as lessons went virtual due to school closures.”
Here are the 3 winning photos of the APEC photo contest that highlight remote learning in the Philippines:
The photo contest’s judges were composed of SOM Chair Vangelis Vitalis, the APEC Secretariat’s Executive Director Dr. Rebecca Sta Maria, award-winning photojournalists Brett Phibbs from New Zealand, and Kathleen Lei Limayo from The Philippines as well as North America Photo Editor for Agence France Presse Eric Baradat.
The winners were judged based on their interpretations of APEC 2021 priorities, as well as their photographs’ composition, quality, and creativity.
Now on its 10th year, the APEC Photo Contest invited photographers around the world to submit their creative interpretations of APEC’S theme, “Join, Work, Grow. Together”.
Previous Filipino winners of the APEC Photo Contest include Danilo Victoriano and Jerry Lee.
Team Philippines won a Top 10 spot in the 2021 World Photographic Cup (WPC) while the country’s Zone V Camera Club (ZVCC or Zone V) held an online photo exhibit and print sale to raise funds for underprivileged students in Sapang Palay, Bulacan.
